The Internet is becoming increasingly inhospitable in new and creative ways as individuals use social media more and more for dark purposes. Whether it’s an attack on individuals, a corporation, a product, a government agency, or some other icon, aggressive forms of criticism, humiliation, and public embarrassment require some serious thinking, preemptive actions, and a response strategy.
Because the Web has become such an important element in effective and comprehensive response to crisis situations, more and more companies are establishing template sites, also called “dark” sites, which are pre-organized with pre-authorized information. These “dark” sites are set up for immediate respond to the general nature of crises and used to get ahead of the negativity caused by delays in responding to situations of public interest.
In the Internet 2.0 age, accuracy is often sacrificed for immediacy, a sense of intimacy, and intimidation. Ever larger audiences have instant access to an ongoing flood of commentary, blogging, word of mouth, media bloviating, and more. Corporations must take the lead in providing sufficient, clear information with great promptness. The more urgent or explosive the story, the more necessary it becomes to have strategies, dark sites, and template responses ready to go.
James Lukaszewski teams up with Idil Cakim to talk about the important Internet tools – dark sites, social networking, blogs, word of mouth – in an era of increasing explosiveness, decreasing civility, and impetuous threats, remedies, and outcomes.
